Other World Computing (OWC) has announced the Envoy Pro FX, a waterproof and ‘ultra rugged’ plug-and-play SSD that offers sequential read/write speeds of up to 2,800MB/s.

The bus-powered SSD is constructed of aluminum. In addition to making the SSD IP67 rated, the aluminum housing also acts as a heat sink to passively cool the internal OWC Aura memory. The Envoy Pro FX is plug-and-play with essentially any device that can accept a USB-A, USB-C or Thunderbolt connection, including Linux, macOS and Windows computers, as well as iPad Pros, Chromebooks, Surface devices and more.

When using the device with a Thunderbolt 3-compatible device, the Envoy Pro FX can achieve its max sequential read/write speeds of up to 2,800MB/s. If you’re using it with a USB 3.2 Gen 2 connection, it will max out at the 1,250MB/s limit of the host port.

To achieve its maximum 2,711MB/s sequential read/write performance it cites in its marketing material, OWC notes it used the 4TB version of the OWC Aura Pro P12 SSD. However, OWC is maxing out its current units with a 2TB Aura Pro P12 SSD, so there’s a chance real-world usage could be slightly down from the rated speeds since, generally speaking, larger SSDs offer better sequential read/write speeds.

The device features a status LED light for confirmation of power and activity status, as well as nonskid rubber feet for keeping it in place when plugged in. It measures 2cm (0.8″) tall, 11cm (4.3″) long and 6.5cm (2.6″) wide.

The Envoy Pro FX is available in 240GB, 480GB, 1TB and 2TB capacities for $170, $200, $300 and $480, respectively. All units are backed by OWC’s three-year limited warranty and are available to purchase form OWC’s online store.
